    相对于以摇滚乐、舞曲音乐，包括布鲁斯、节奏与布鲁斯、灵歌在内的黑人音乐以及传统的古典音乐而言，New Age（新世纪音乐）是指以通俗的手法创作或改变的一种风格典雅，可听性很强的，但在聆听感觉上又不同于一般流行乐的一种现代音乐。二十世纪七十年代，藉由一群艺术家们的不懈努力，他们把这种非流行、非古典，具实验性质的乐风取名为New Age，它可以包括世界各民族民间的音乐，但在表现上以现代流行手法为主，多以电子合成器演奏。
